| _______________ | 35 | | GameSpot ? Maxis hiring for future Online PC simulation game | | A job listing (http://bit.ly/bKyKro) spotted by Superannuation (http://bit.ly/RPRxr) asks for a development director for an unannounced “next-generation online simulation game” at the Maxis studio in Emeryville, California.
Although specifics on the project are unknown, EA is clearly looking for an experienced individual to help lead it. The listing requires its applicant to have more than 5 years of “project management experience on at least two shipped titles,” one of which must be a PC game.
Additionally, the listing hints that work on the project is still in the earliest stages. Applicants must have “created a development plan for a title from concept to ship” to be considered for the position. As of press time, Electronic Arts has not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment on the job listing.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they plan to jump back to the SimCity series for this.* Their current work is Spore, and DarkSpore should be announced sometime next week…So either this is going to be another Spore game (or possibly, DarkSpore itself), a new IP, or just maybe – maybe SimCity 5.* I don’t think it’ll be anything to do with The Sims as otherwise the listing would show up as EA.* And they know for a fact that they can generate a huge mass of sales with Maxis once again behind the SimCity franchise.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

| _______________ | 40 | | PC Authority ? Top 10 geek entertainment franchises | | Have to love top 10 lists…except when they screw it up!* Credit is given for the fact that I agree with the majority of their choices…But I think Will Wright should rank higher and Doctor Who should be swapped out with Star Trek for the number one spot.* Sorry Will, but I have to pick the Tardis over you Image: http://www.simprograms.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif * Here’s what *PC Authority* (http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/216002,top-10-geek-entertainment-franchises.aspx) had to say about our beloved (4th placed) Will Wright on their Top 10 geek entertainment franchises list:
Iain Thomson: I like the fact that Wright is on the list because most of his input has been towards making computer games something for building things up rather than tearing them down.
Wright was the creator of SimCity and its future generations, games that really focussed on building good things. It’s an easy jibe, but a true one, that most computer games are built around the concept of “If it moves, shoot it. If it doesn’t, shoot it until it does.” Wright’s work took that focussed energy and moving it to building things – first cities and then people.
Wright’s attempt to tie his entire history of computer games into the Spore release was understandable but looks like a hubris-inspired mistake. We wait to see what comes out of him next.
Shaun Nichols: I grew up in that uncomfortable era when companies were pushing educational software to schools, but they hadn’t yet figured out that ‘educational’ didn’t have to mean ‘boring.’ Other than the occasional Ted Nugent buffalo hunting trip in Oregon Trail, the most entertaining thing we did with educational games was poke stuff in the disk drive until it started making funny sounds.
Then when I was in 3rd grade or so, a friend showed me Sim City. As with any great game, we played it for hours without even realising we were learning anything. Needless to say, my mother was more than a bit surprised when I came home and asked her about zoning laws and power grids.
Even more impressive is that nearly 20 years later, it’s still fun to fire up an emulator and replay SimCity and other Will Wright games. That is the hallmark of a great game; easy enough for young children to learn and deep enough for adults to still enjoy. Wright is the master at that.

| _______________ | 41 | | IGN: SimCity Deluxe (iPhone) debuts in July | | *IGN* met up with producer Philip Cohen from the SimCity Deluxe development team at E3 and posted a follow up on the status of the game.* It’s target release date is in July.* Personally I can’t wait to get the game, the first one was enjoyable although had its share of issues.* Hopefully this game can correct those problems.
Cohen quickly admitted that SimCity’s menus and interface needed a bit of work. In Deluxe, all of the multi-level deep menus have been replaced with overlay menus that do not take you out of the city-planning action. The disappearing buildings have been fixed, too. Now, sprites will scale smoothly when you zoom in and out of SimCity Deluxe.
SimCityDeluxe adds starter cities so players can jump right into a pre-made metro. These cities are based on real-world locations, such as Paris. There are also several scenarios you can play, which add structure to the game. For example, you must build up the city infrastructure in anticipation of an incoming world games event. Disasters are also in the mix. So, now you must watch for misfortune to befall your city, such as meteor strikes.

| _______________ | 45 | | Know Your Mobile ? SimCity Deluxe review | | SimCity Deluxe is a reboot of the original game in every respect, and while most franchises would suffer from trolling out the same old gameplay, something as infinitely playable and enjoyable as SimCity doesn't suffer in the same way.
That it's so easy to pick up and play on a mobile handset is a testament to the quality of its design, so if a game of SimCity Classic (which is what this game should really have been called) sounds appealing, then you're in for a city-building treat.
